In today’s story, John Tenney, Kyle Davis and Chris Yarn pay a visit to Jeff Ciafone and the Game Truck, with special guests Troy Bennett, Kathleen, Grace and Sophia Tenney, and Nick Kosmitis

This mobile gaming paradise is available for parties, events, or whatever you might need on an hourly basis. See GameTruckParty.com/Orlando for information on rates, availability and even franchise opportunities.

A big thank you to Jeff for letting us play games for free today! Here is a rather dark (it’s darker inside the truck than ideal for a video) but very informative piece on the Game Truck and its owner, Jeff Ciafone.

Featured Business: East Orlando Sun

Megan Stokes, East Orlando Sun Editor“We want to see more local people doing business with locals.” Megan Stokes summed up the economic initiative of LEO! in one sentence.

As the associate editor of the East Orlando Sun, Megan’s goal is to be the local community paper, and provide a vehicle for the community and local business to thrive.

“We work with the local Rotary and feature a business of the week, much like your featured business articles on your site.” Megan tells us, “We should really work together more often. We share the same goals.”

We heartily agree. Expect to see more cooperation between the Sun and LEO! in the future.

When asked, “What does the community need to know about the Sun that it is not taking advantage of?” Megan told us, “We need more people telling us about local happenings. I’d like to see input from the schools about events and athletic achievements. I’d like to hear about local groups that are out doing things. We will publish it. We have weekly calendars for several topics. We need to hear more from our readers.”

So there you have it. Local people, use this resource. Contact the Sun and tell them what is happening. They will publish it!

Here is a video interview of Megan Stokes by LEO! president John Will Tenney:

Featured Business: Global Access Technologies, Inc.

Global Access TechnologiesWe were pleased to sit down today with George Tunaya, the President and CEO of Global Access Technologies, Inc. GAT is a licensed small arms and munitions dealer. Their clients are US Gov’t agencies, including the Navy, especially through the Naval Air Warfare Center office in Research Park.

Geogre Tunaya, Global Access Technologies, Inc“We supply many DOD and other government agencies, such as the Veteran’s Administration, Homeland Security and the like.” George tells us. “We stick with government agencies because there is excellent tracking and paper trails of the arms and munitions.”

“We represent companies that have a US presence. Some of them are based in other countries as well.”

George was in the US Navy for 26 years, where he had some disabling injuries. “It was mostly one incident in a helicopter, where our pilot was trying to do an autorotation and landed hard. That caused some of my back and leg problems. I wouldn’t give up one year of it though, it was very worth it!”

When asked where he saw East Orlando going in the next few years, George told us, “I see the defense budgets coming back. It has been reduced a bit in the last few years but I see that coming back to East Orlando.”

“The fact that UCF turns out good animators and simulator engineers can only be good for the industry. I think UCF actually has a partnership with the Naval Air Warfare Center.”

Geogre Tunaya, Global Access Technologies, Inc.George was stationed most of his career in California, but when his facility was closed he was moved to the East Orlando office. “I decided to have a go at it myself.” George told us. “We are definitely a ‘credit’ business to the area, bringing over $300,000 to the area last year alone. I’m very happy I decided to go in to business.”

Featured Business – Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids

GoogleMaps storefront sharkey's cuts for kids orlandoWhen the owners of Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids in Avalon Park went looking for a business, they weren’t exactly looking for a kid’s hair salon.

“It was more about the kids than the cutting” co-owner Lee Lively-Garcia tells us. “We told the business broker we wanted something to work with children, like a day-care for example. The Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids franchise turned out to be a perfect match.”

“Kids need distractions when getting their hair cut. It can be very boring for them in a traditional salon” Lee’s husband Mark Garcia added. “We have distractions. From video games to seats that look like race cars, to music, games, you name it, we can keep a kid distracted so they don’t mind that their hair is being cut. Parents love us for that.”

When asked “Why East Orlando?” they gave us two reasons:

Lee: “The schools in East Orlando were excellent. We wanted good schools for our son.”
Mark: “… and Avalon Park offered us an opportunity we could not find any where else. There is not another community like this as far as we know.”

An unexpected benefit was the success they have with special needs children. “That was a surprise for us” said Lee. “We have great success with Autistic Children and kids with Down’s Syndrome. That is a great feeling!”

We asked them about their most unusual or most entertaining success story yet. They had two stories to tell us. “First, a success story,” related Lee. “We had an Autistic child whose mother was about to give up. They had been asked not to come back to three other hair salons. After about 3 chair swaps and at least a couple of lap changes, we completed the haircut in about 40 minutes. The mom was extremely happy with us :)

“We also had a father who answered his son’s wish and had us cut the Arrow haircut from the movie “Avatar, the Last Airbender” for his boy. Mom wasn’t too happy about that but it ended up being a success story.” Lee relates.

Mark adds, “Yes, they ended up being the winner’s of our years worth of free haircuts, even though he was going to be growing his hair back for the next few months. Very ironic.”

Grub Taxi, an Innovation in Delivery

Featured Business

Grub Taxi, LLC is one of the most unique ideas to come out of the East Orlando area.

The brainchild of Dominick Abitino and his partner Al Giammattei, they started Grub Taxi, LLC in 2008. Although they are based in Orlando they serve other areas such as the Florida East coast as far south as Palm Beach.

They have been delivering food for their restaurant clients since 2008.

Ashley Guba, Office Manager tells us; “If I were a restaurant owner looking at hiring a delivery staff, well I would hate to have to do all that stuff myself. We give them time to build their business and not worry about the delivery details.”

We at LEO! are also clients of Grub Taxi. Our office frequently orders food through their service and we are very happy with the service. One of our writers tells us, “… the food always gets here fast and it’s still warm!”

They have become famous locally. Here is an article from the Central Florida Future magazine.

Grub Taxi’s headquarters are in Orlando, FL. More information can be found at Grub Taxi.com or by calling 407.770.6004

Incorporation? What’s going on?

People are asking about the incorporation effort. Here are some Q&A’s from LEO!

Is anything going on?
Yes. People are working on the effort.

Is the election going to affect this?
Certainly. We need elected officials to support this.

Why haven’t we heard anything lately?
It’s simply a matter of waiting for the election results. Who gets elected is going to greatly influence the strategy.

Who are the people who do NOT support us?
Well no one is running with the incorporation effort as one of their major platforms, but it is safe to say that Sandy Adams has been a great help to us. Jennifer Thompson has promised to leave it to the voters and not fight us.

Is there anything I can do to help?
The best thing to do right now is what you are doing. Ask questions. Talk about it. Make it a buzz. Help people to understand that this is something that needs to be addressed. Talk to your elected officials about it too!

Why Incorporate?

Article for Avalon Park News
Why Incorporate?
John Tenney, Leaders of East Orlando

To the residents of East Orlando:
Have you noticed that our roads are being dug up and repaired during the holiday season? Have you noticed this seems to happen every year?

Why is that?

Here is a possible reason: We are not represented properly at the county level. Our immediate contact in the county government system is our commissioner. It has been said that contacting the commissioner about small problems out here is like the janitor at Florida Hospital asking the president if he can go buy another jug of soap.

It is true that we have little or no control over our services out here. The same is true for how our tax money is spent. Even if our commissioner supported us, that is only one vote out of seven.

So what are the alternatives?

1: We can do nothing. We can continue to let the county take care of us when they see fit, or not at all. We can voice our opinions to the commissioner’s office and hopefully if enough people complain something can be done about it.

2: We can be “absorbed” in to the county in a consolidation effort. This is similar to what Jacksonville did. There is only one county and one city there now, all run by the same government. Unfortunately this doesn’t fix any of the problems, as we are basically in the same place, dependent upon our commissioner’s office.

3: We can be “annexed” in to the City of Orlando. At first glance, this seems like an attractive proposition. The city enjoys excellent services and an above average police force. However, the original problem of no representation still remains. Even if we get a city commissioner out here we still have one vote in a multi-commissioner board. Also, we would immediately see a significant increase in taxes. We currently pay an Unincorporated Tax District (UTD) assessment of 1.804 mills. The city millage rate is currently over 8.5, plus they have additional assessments for police, fire, ambulance, 911, etc. Upon further review, this is not a good option

4: We can incorporate in to a new city. What does this give us besides another layer of government? Well immediately we have control and accountability over our own tax dollars. We can remove the police and fire assessments and negotiate directly for these services and save a significant amount of money.

For example: In the area defined by a recent incorporation effort, there is currently $36 million plus going for sheriff’s services. At all times, there are 6 to 8 officers in 3 to 6 vehicles in that area.

The sheriff’s department currently leases COMPLETE deputy services, including uniforms, vehicles, dispatch, etc for $150,000 per deputy per year to the city of Bell Isle.

We could lease 60 officers for $9 million dollars, and save $27 million in taxes.

Similar increase in service, with savings, exist in the other service departments.

Why is this possible?
Well, it has long been known that the East Orlando area is a “credit area” when it comes to taxes vs. services. Even by the county’s own numbers, which have not been verified by independent sources, we pay 117% over what what we receive now.

This may be the time to start a new city. The group known as the Leaders of East Orlando thinks so. They have teamed with an incorporation group known as EOCIE – the East Orange County Incorporation Effort. You can find out more about them at their website – EOCIE.com.

Why hasn’t it happened yet?
A sad but simple here is reduced to one word: Apathy. People who live here are either transient or so new to the area they do not feel a sense of community yet.

What can I do?
You can get involved. Go to the local incorporation websites and sign up for the newsletter. Attend an event. Get out and VOTE. Make your voice heard.

What if we do nothing? Will anything change?
Yes and probably not for the good. All four leading candidates for County mayor currently support consolidation and are not in favor of incorporation. If we do nothing, nothing good happens.
