Like you and me, they want “My Own Website.”

They don’t want to be slaves to an IT company. They don’t want to have to call someone or email someone to change some content. They don’t want to hire expensive designers every time they make a change.

We have found that small business owners want “My Own Website That I Can Update and Maintain Myself”, at least in the Orlando area and we are pretty sure this is just about everywhere.

Our goal is to give them just that. For a modest setup fee and a competitive monthly service fee we create a website that they can update, maintain, change, redesign or whatever. If they need help we are there.

We know that small business owners don’t want to learn how to write a website. They don’t want to learn a programming language. So we make it easy. We teach them how to use a Content Management System (CMS) that doesn’t require any of that knowledge. The instructions are in simple English and most of the functions are point and click.

Small business owners are often confronted with sticker shock when they see a proposal for performing Search Engine Operation (SEO) for their business websites.

“Why should I pay so much to get people to my website?” they ask. Good question. Indeed, why? Is it really hard to do? Well yes it is. Read on.

A lot of misinformation is floating around out there. Many claims are being made. “We can get you to #1 on Google!” is heard often. Let’s discuss this:

Being #1 on Google. What does this mean?
Before you worry about being “#1 on Google” let’s first find out what you want to be #1 for. This involves keyword research. It is a three step process:

• Define your niche product or service
• Define your potential client market
• Determine what they are typing in search engines to find your products or services

Let’s talk about these steps.

Define your niche product or service
Too often, we see people trying to do too much. They try to solve every problem and corner the entire market. Ask yourself this question:

“Can I really handle 100% of the market?”

An honest person would say “No, of course not.” So let’s work on finding out what you are best at. Then we can determine what problem or situation exists where you can best assist your potential client.

I have often said, and will say here: “If you try to be everything to everyone you will end up being nothing to nobody.”

Define your potential client market
Sounds easy doesn’t it? Why do people get it wrong then?

Your potential market is people who have a problem that you can fix, and you are the best person or company to fix it. You can skip features and benefits for now. People don’t buy for features and benefits. They buy to fix a problem, perceived or real. Concentrate on fixing those problems.

So what are they typing to find someone like me?
Well here is where the hard part comes in. There are extensive tools to do keyword research. We also must remember that a keyword is rarely a word, but more often a phrase. For example, for a potential Mid Florida Digital customer, the phrase may be “low cost self maintained website”.

The methods to determine these phrases get pretty technical so I won’t bore you with technical speech. Let me just say find someone who has experience and a proven track record to do this for you.

“So this is why it’s so expensive?”
Yes. Real SEO, or what is known as White Hat SEO, involves extensive research and an in depth interview with the client. No one can do your SEO for you properly unless they have a thorough knowledge of what you do.

There are some services out there that take shortcuts and try to “exploit” the search engines by using questionable and even unapproved methods to drive traffic to your site. This is referred to as Black Hat SEO. Would a smart business person want to be involved in something like this? It certainly doesn’t reflect long term thinking.

In summary, a good SEO service is founded on the following principle:

“In order to have a good search engine score, it is important that you be what people are looking for when they type those keywords.”

Is it worth paying more for good SEO? Well answer this question, “Where is most of your new business going to be coming from in the next five to ten years?” If “your website” is one of the top three answers, then SEO is worth looking in to.

As you can see, there are no short cuts here. Take the time to research any SEO offer you might receive. If it’s low priced and sounds “too good to be true” well maybe that’s exactly what it is.
